FOURTH OF JULY PARADE IN BARNSTABLE

For Immediate Release

HYANNIS--The Town of Barnstable will once again host the largest parade on Cape Cod on Thursday, July 4, 2013 on Main Street, Hyannis at 4pm.

The theme of the 15th annual Town of Barnstable 4th of July Parade is “Main Street, USA” and will feature over fifty floats, community groups and bands, as well as a children’s bike parade hosted by the Hyannis Civic Association. It is recommended that parade goers head to Main Street early to get a parking spot, and enjoy all that Main Street has to offer, from restaurants to shops and amusements.

Consistent with the theme, the Grand Marshalls of the parade will be the Penn Family. The Penns own Puritan Cape Cod, which has been located on Main Street Hyannis since 1939. Rick and Jim Penn, who now run the stores, along with Milton Penn (who turns 90 this year) will lead the parade in tribute to the members of their family who are no longer with us, as well as the whole downtown community.

Rick and Jim, who were surprised and honored by the recognition, believe that Hyannis Main Street is not just a place to work; it is also a place to live and have fun. “When we think of Main Street, USA, we think of independent [business] owners and a lively atmosphere and Hyannis Main Street fits that,” says Rick.

Parade organizer, Meaghann Kenney, praises the Penns for their commitment not only to the Hyannis Main Street community, noting their newly renovated façade collective continual involvement in Main Street events and on many Main Street Boards and Committees, but also their endless philanthropy town and region-wide.

The parade route will start at the intersection of Ocean Street and Main Street and continue down to Sea Street and then cross over to South Street.

Parade float entrants will be judged and the winners will be awarded ribbons after the parade on the Hyannis Village Green. Immediately following the awards ceremony, the Town of Barnstable Band will perform patriotic songs at the Town Bandstand on the Hyannis Village Green until 6:30pm.

Local band Jo & Co. will perform on Aselton Park prior to the annual fireworks display at dusk. The fireworks are visible from beaches and locations facing Nantucket Sound.
